Every year around the winter solstice, people in Shaoxing start making rice cakes.

Traditional handmade rice cakes generally have nine processes: soaking rice, grinding flour, pressing, draining, kneading flour, steaming, pounding, making cake, and drying.

 

The place where rice cakes are made is called a cake shop. A traditional cake shop usually has a large stove, a steamer, a mortar, a rice cake board, etc., which are used to steam cake flowers, push rice cakes, and knead rice cakes.

The freshly made cake is soft, glutinous and sweet

Dip it in sesame seeds or sugar and take a bite

Full of rice flavor and chewy

Full of nostalgia and New Year flavor
