The Goal of AI Gadgets: Can They Create a Living "Labubu"?

While robots in the workplace are no longer a novelty, the concept of a truly “alive” robot is still a rare phenomenon. Ropet, launched by the startup Mengyou Intelligence, is the first emotional companion robot designed to create a smart robotic pet powered by AI technology.
Positioned as a robotic pet, Ropet’s core selling point lies in its “adorable” nature. It can keep you company during those dull office hours, staring at you with its big eyes. It requires daily meals, and when hungry, it even lets out a little growl. Over time, it could evolve into a reflection of your personality—growing closer and more attuned to you as you interact with it. The intimacy and development levels increase with your communication, and it can either sit on your desk or accompany you as a portable companion, much like the AI character DAN derived from ChatGPT, developing into a standalone entity.
However, while its cute appearance certainly adds to its appeal, the charm of Ropet alone cannot fully support the hardware’s AI potential.
At its core, Ropet is an intelligent hardware platform featuring a built-in camera, capable of 360-degree rotation and perception. When paired with an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) chassis, Ropet can achieve full autonomous movement. Interestingly, Ropet's interaction does not rely on conversation, meaning it is not dependent on the evolution of large language models. Nevertheless, its performance in inference does experience some impact as a result of this design choice.
Ropet is primarily focused on the research and development of visual algorithms, which serve as the foundation for extensive innovations in both the product’s design and user interaction. The goal is to create "spiritual interaction," where the robot’s behavior simulates biological characteristics to enhance the user experience.
The vision for Ropet is to go beyond being a mere tool for executing commands—its true potential lies in becoming an emotional companion for users. The key to this lies in simulating natural biological behaviors and reactions. As a result, significant resources have been dedicated to refining Ropet’s dynamic expressions, response patterns, and non-verbal communication with users. The aim is for Ropet to provide warmth and companionship, much like a true living partner.
Through its “spiritual” design, Ropet enhances user immersion and emotional connection. With thoughtfully designed interactions and reactions, Ropet is envisioned not just as a technological product but as a companion that offers emotional support and friendship. This concept requires deep exploration and innovation across multiple domains—hardware design, software algorithms, and user experience—making Ropet a truly unique addition to the world of emotional robotics.
The global market presents vast opportunities, with a potential scale roughly five times larger than that of the Chinese market. Notably, the North American market shows a strong acceptance of innovative products. By effectively engaging the initial core user base—enthusiastic about cutting-edge products—there are plans to launch the product in March to April, 2025.
Ropet’s primary target audience includes tech enthusiasts and consumers who seek a high-quality lifestyle. Its use cases span across home companionship, educational entertainment, and special care needs. Through Ropet, the goal is to address users' diverse demands for smart robotics across various scenarios, enhancing both convenience and enjoyment in their daily lives.
